Franchise FAQ
Your Questions, Answered
Straight answers to the questions every prospective franchise owner asks — from costs and experience to earnings, veterans benefits, and legal details.
How much does it cost to start a JAN-PRO franchise?
JAN-PRO offers two investment plans. The Starter Plan ranges from $5,000 to $35,000 and is ideal for first-time business owners or those building a side hustle. The Growth Plan ranges from $35,000 to $150,000 and provides a larger initial customer portfolio with an accelerated path to higher revenue. Both plans include customers, training, equipment, technology, and ongoing support. Financing options are available, including the VetConnection program for eligible veterans.
Do I need cleaning experience to start?
No. JAN-PRO’s 4-phase, 5-week training program is designed for people with zero cleaning experience. You’ll learn everything from business setup and legal requirements to hands-on cleaning techniques, equipment operation, chemical safety, customer service, and field operations. You’ll be certified before you clean your first account. Many of our most successful franchise owners came from completely unrelated industries.
How does territory and account assignment work?
Your Regional Developer sources and assigns commercial cleaning accounts within your designated service area. You don’t cold-call or bid on jobs — accounts are brought to you based on your plan level, capacity, and geographic preferences. As you grow and demonstrate quality performance, additional accounts are assigned. Territory exclusivity details are outlined in the Franchise Disclosure Document.
How quickly can I start earning revenue?
Most franchise owners begin earning revenue within weeks of completing their training and certification. Your initial customer accounts are assigned as part of your investment plan, so there’s no lengthy startup period of waiting for clients. The exact timeline depends on your plan level, Regional Developer, and local market conditions. See Item 19 of the FDD for substantiated financial performance data.
How much can I earn as a JAN-PRO franchise owner?
Earnings vary based on your investment plan, the accounts you service, your market, and how you grow your business. Starter Plan owners typically build toward $50K–$150K in annual revenue, while Growth Plan owners often target $250K–$1M+ as they add employees and accounts. JAN-PRO provides substantiated financial performance data in Item 19 of the Franchise Disclosure Document. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.
What kind of ongoing support do I receive?
JAN-PRO franchise owners receive comprehensive ongoing support through their Regional Developer, including: account sourcing and sales, billing and collections, quality inspections using the JAN-PRO Tracker® system, marketing and brand management, equipment and supply purchasing, and one-on-one coaching with a dedicated Business Consultant. Support continues for the life of your franchise agreement.
Can I keep my day job and start part-time?
Yes. Many franchise owners — especially those on the Starter Plan — begin part-time while keeping their existing job. Commercial cleaning typically happens evenings and weekends, so it fits around a traditional work schedule. As your revenue and confidence grow, you can transition to full-time ownership and hire employees to expand capacity.
What benefits are available for military veterans?
JAN-PRO’s VetConnection program offers eligible veterans up to 50% financing on their initial franchise fee. You’ll need to provide your DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) during the discovery process. JAN-PRO was founded by a military veteran, and the program reflects a commitment to helping service members transition to business ownership. Visit our Veterans page for full details.
How does JAN-PRO compare to other cleaning franchises?
JAN-PRO differentiates on several key factors: the longest training program in the industry (5 weeks vs. 1–2 weeks for competitors), 95%+ franchise owner retention rate (the highest publicly disclosed), proprietary technology including real-time verification and instant online quoting, and the widest investment range ($5K–$150K). We publish a detailed side-by-side comparison on our Compare Franchises page.
Can I sell my franchise or pass it to a family member?
Yes. JAN-PRO franchise agreements include provisions for transfer, sale, or succession. You’re building an asset with real value — your customer contracts, equipment, and trained staff can be transferred to an approved buyer or family member. Specific terms, conditions, and approval requirements are detailed in the Franchise Disclosure Document.
What is the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD)?
The FDD is a legal document that every franchise company is required to provide to prospective buyers at least 14 calendar days before you sign any agreement or pay any fees. It contains 23 items covering the franchise system, fees, obligations, financial performance (Item 19), territory rights, franchisee contact lists, and audited financial statements. We encourage every prospective franchise owner to review the FDD with an attorney and financial advisor.
Do I need to hire a lawyer before signing?
While it’s not legally required, JAN-PRO strongly recommends that you have an attorney review the Franchise Disclosure Document and franchise agreement before signing. A franchise-experienced attorney can explain your rights, obligations, and the specific terms of your agreement. Many franchise attorneys offer flat-fee FDD reviews. This is one of the most important investments you’ll make — professional guidance is worth it.
What technology do franchise owners use?
JAN-PRO franchise owners have access to a proprietary technology platform that includes: JAN-PRO Tracker® (50-point digital inspection system with GPS verification), the Client Portal (self-service access for facility managers), scheduling and route optimization tools, EnviroShield® electrostatic disinfection protocols, mobile dashboards for business performance tracking, and the JAN-PRO Check™ QR code feedback system.
What happens if I lose a customer?
Customer turnover is a normal part of any service business. When an account is lost, your Regional Developer works to replace it with a comparable account as quickly as possible. This is one of the key benefits of the JAN-PRO model — you don’t have to find your own replacements. Your Business Consultant will also review the situation with you to identify any quality or service improvements that could prevent future losses.
